Periodontal Care in Minneapolis
The gums and bone provide support for your teeth. They are the foundation of a healthy mouth. In recent years research has shown that bacterial inflammation involved in gum disease has been linked to chronic health problems like diabetes, stroke and coronary artery disease. Specifically, poor oral health can negatively affect a diabetic’s control of their insulin and poorly controlled diabetes can result in development and progression of periodontal disease.
Dr. Oz and his team take great care to identify and treat gum disease early to keep you and your mouth healthy. At each dental health maintenance appointment they do a thorough gum tissue health evaluation and they use the newest in digital x-ray technology to detect changes in the bone supporting the teeth.
Gum, or periodontal disease can cause inflammation, called gingivitis, tooth loss and bone damage. Gum disease ranges from mild gingivitis to moderate and severe periodontitis. Gum disease begins with a sticky film of bacteria called plaque. Gums in the early stage of disease, or gingivitis, can bleed easily and become red and swollen. As the disease progresses to periodontitis, teeth may loosen, fall out or may need to be removed by a dentist. Gum disease is highly preventable and can usually be avoided by daily brushing and flossing. Regular checkups will help detect gum disease in the early stages when it can be most successfully treated.
